Winter Afternoon, Doon by Frederick Varley is an 11.75 x 15 inch oil on board that was produced circa 1948 and signed in the bottom left corner. It has the artist inventory no. 1080 on the reverse and comes from the Collection of the Artist. It was acquired directly from Frederick Varley by the previous collector in the 1960’s before joining Rookleys Canadian Art. Doon, now known as Kitchener, Ontario is portrayed in moody hues of green and teal. Tangled webs of branches intersect throughout the composition, creating a sense of chaos and distortion. A tall structure looms in the distance, framed by the ominous silhouettes of towering trees. Varley, member of the renowned Canadian art collective Group of Seven, uses loose brush strokes and thin layers of paint to add texture and further movement to this intriguing and mysterious piece.
