Above the Niagara River by David Drum is a 14 x 17.5 inch oil on archival foamcore that was produced in 1992 and signed in the bottom right corner. The painting depicts the rushing Niagara River as seen from the escarpment. Gnarled branches of overhanging trees obscure the cerulean waters of the fast moving river below. Their trunks frame the composition, as the viewer gazes down toward the water. Drum uses a cheerful colour palette of saturated blues and greens, contrasted with pops of orange and yellow throughout. His style, characterized by quick brush strokes and layers of colour, shines in this piece, highlighting his ability to capture the feeling and essence of a specific location.
The painting comes directly to Rookleys from the artist’s Crystal Beach studio.
