Old Pine Trees by Dewitt Drake is an 8.8 x 10.5 inch oil on board produced circa 1940. Drake was known for not signing any of his work, but an estate stamp is featured on the bottom right corner of the painting as well as on the back, verifying its authenticity. The piece depicts two large pine trees looming in an open field. The trees cast a dark shadow on the ground beneath, that contrasts with the more saturated hues in the rest of the composition. The sky is painted in varying shades of purple with hints of blue and gold sprinkled throughout, while the grass is painted in a vibrant green. Drake uses this unexpected combination of colours as well as dynamic brushstrokes to create an intriguing landscape that captures a lot of interest.
