Barn in Winter is a 1976 watercolour on paper painting by Kurt Swinghammer. Nearly devoid of any colour, save for the partly rust-coloured roofs of the barns, this 9.5 x 14 inch piece renders a desolate winter landscape. Swinghammer’s employs large amounts of white space both in the snowy hills found in the foreground and the sky found in the background. In doing so, he is able to cultivate feelings of isolation.
The piece has been framed with museum glass in order to preserve its condition. Swinghammer’s signature can be found in the bottom right corner of the piece, along with the date of the painting’s production. Rookleys’ gallery label can be found pasted to the reverse of the piece as part of the piece’s provenance. Other provenance of the artwork includes its time as part of a private collection in Niagara Falls.
