Northern Lake by Peter Haworth is a 14 x 22 inch watercolour on paper produced circa 1960 and signed in the bottom right corner. The piece is done in an abstract style combining natural elements with geometric forms. Haworth uses a limited colour palette of muted earth tones to create this unique take on a landscape, playing with negative and positive space and layering line and shape. The dynamic composition draws the eye in and across the scene where it can piece together the more elusive image of a lake, shrouded in foliage, rolling hills off into the distance.
Haworth was known for his innovative work in stained glass. This influence can be seen in the fragmentation of this painting and his use of shape to create an overall larger composition. This piece was featured in The Women’s Committee of the Art Gallery of Toronto and has the original price of $85 on the back.
