A hand-written label on the reverse indicates the painting was gifted to James Bewill in 1956. It was also on display at Laing Galleries in Toronto before being added to the Rookleys collection.
The piece depicts a winter landscape in rural Quebec. A river trickles through a snow covered village. Smoke pours from the chimneys of several of the houses, hinting at the fires burning within. A large mountain range surrounds the town, painted in rich shades of blue. A horse drawn carriage can be seen crossing a bridge that leads over the river. The scene transports viewers to a simpler time, inspiring nostalgia and sentiment.
