Located in Banff National Park, Alberta, Saddle Mountain (2,433 m) overlooks the lake townsite and forms part of the dramatic Bow Range in the Canadian Rockies. The mountain is named from the distinct saddle-like shape of the peak when viewed from certain angles, especially from the Lake Louise area. The lower slopes are forested with subalpine evergreens, while the upper elevations are comprised of bare rock.In this composition, a blanket of low-lying clouds drapes the mountain. These clouds are not just background detail, they are the focal point of this painting. Many travellers regularly describe the “moody, beautiful” effect of low clouds over Lake Louise, noting that even amidst rain or fog, the scenery remains breathtaking.
Beder uses a palette of cool greys and deep blues in the misty midground, contrasting with richer, earthy greens and ochres in the foreground. The sky feels expansive despite its cloud cover.
