Executed in pastel on paper, the composition features a dense grouping of slender, leafless trees rendered in soft greys, browns, pale blues with hints of forest green. The subdued palette and vertical lines depict the stillness of the season.
In his 800 page journal, Jack Beder wrote about this piece:
"Last Sunday morning, I drove over again to the woods to look for a subject for my second paper. It had snowed again the night before, so there was more snow on the ground. After driving around and considering several spots, I started a composition at the corner of two streets of a clump of bare trees and some shrubs that still had their green leaves, against the background of the larger stand of woods.
After working for a while on this pleasant sunny morning, I decided to come back another time and complete this sketch, as I did with the other composition."
This pastel on paper measures 12 x 16 inches, is signed by the artist on the lower right. It is featured on page 132 of Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada (2025), a publication by Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery, and is catalogued as inventory #101 from the Beder estate.
