Henri-Julien Avenue itself is a notable street in Montreal running
through vibrant neighbourhoods like Le Plateau Mont-Royal and
Villeray Saint-Michel Parc Extension. It is home to several landmark and
historical sites, such as Church of the Madonna della Difesa and the
Fusiliers Mont-Royal Armoury.
The bright palette features bold blues, crisp whites, vibrant yellows and warm ochres, capturing the sunlight illuminating the buildings and street. Beder was well-known for his Montreal street scenes, this piece being a great example.
This pastel on paper, produced in 1963, measures 29 x 23 inches, is signed on the bottom right and is protected by museum glass.
This piece is on pages 3 and 89 of Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada (2025), a publication produced by Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery. This pastel was featured in the Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada exhibition at Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery.
