The painting is signed and dated in the bottom left corner. It depicts a romantic sunset over the Thames River. The silhouette of a medieval style palace can be seen in the distance, painted in vibrant hues of violet and indigo. Boats sail by on the water, bathed in the light of the setting sun. Bell-Smith uses soft washes and warm pastel tones to create an impressionistic feel to this piece, the complimentary colours drawing the eye in.
