Home From School by Tom Roberts is a 8 x 14 inch oil on board that was produced in 1969 and signed in the bottom left corner. The piece depicts a quaint winter country landscape with three figures walking down a snow covered road. The boys amble playfully down the tracks made by the cars in the snow wearing bright coloured jackets that stand out against the white background. A simple wooden fence lines the street, leading the eye towards a farmhouse and barn down the lane. Roberts uses a somber palette of cool grey tones with pops of subtle colour that add a cheerful quality to the piece. The playful banter of the youngsters almost hangs in the cold winter air as they saunter towards their respective houses.
This oil painting has inventory #TR09 and the original price of $100 on the reverse. It was displayed at Wallack Galleries in Ottawa before becoming part of the Rookleys collection.
