Peter Clapham Sheppard’s Spring Stream captures the energy and freshness of a woodland creek during the height of spring runoff. Water rushes through the composition in a succession of small falls and rapids, tumbling over dark rocks before spreading into the calmer pool in the foreground. Sheppard builds the moving water with vigorous strokes of white, cream, pale green and blue-grey, giving the stream a convincing sense of speed and turbulence.

The surrounding forest is alive with new growth. Brilliant yellow-greens and fresh spring foliage contrast sharply with the dark, slender trunks that rise through the scene. Rather than describing every branch and leaf, Sheppard uses broad, energetic brushwork and blocks of colour to suggest the dense woodland. Deep purples, browns and reddish tones in the rocks and tree trunks provide a strong counterpoint to the luminous greens.
