Cattle Grazing by Peleg Franklin Brownell is an 18 x 24.25 inch oil on canvas produced circa 1920 and signed in the bottom left corner. The landscape painting depicts two cows grazing in an open patch of grass. They are surrounded by tall trees as they chew peacefully in the sun. Golden sand dunes in the foreground lead the eye into the piece but a grey sky overhead signals oncoming rain.

Brownell masterfully depicts a blend of light and shadow, the approaching storm clouds, painted in rich blue-greys, contrast with the sunlit field beneath. A master of his craft, Brownell combined realism and impressionism in his work which was known for its use of delicate values and radiant light.
