The piece depicts a horse drawn cart laden with hay. Two men wearing hats and suspenders work vigorously, piling golden straw. The sky is painted in blue and yellow waves, adding movement to the piece.
Known for his portrayal of horses and capturing scenes of rural Ontario activities such as ploughing, logging and fishing, MacDonald represents the working class level of society in his work.
