It is also titled and addressed on the reverse with artist inventory #1195-386. The painting depicts a white stone chateau perched in the middle of the Austrian Alps. Towering mountains surround the medieval castle, their peaks covered in thick layers of snow. The dark figures of pine trees contrast against the white and the glow of the sun. Riordon was known for his ability to depict atmospheric light which he masterfully demonstrates here. Using subtle shifts in value he is able to capture both the depth and the warmth of this whimsical scene.
