Remains of the Fire, Near Radium by Doris McCarthy is a 20.75 x 29 inch watercolour on paper that is protected by museum glass. The piece was produced in 1977 and is signed in the bottom right hand corner. It depicts a rugged mountain landscape. Rolling hills in the foreground are spattered with the ashy remains of dying trees. Jagged, snow covered peaks can be seen off into the distance, as if shrouded in smoke. McCarthy uses soft washes and a limited colour palette to portray the barren scene, the beauty of the Rocky Mountains still apparent despite the destruction of the fire. Her impressionistic technique and use of cool grey and soft blue creates a somber feeling to the piece, capturing the stillness and isolation of the remote wilderness setting.
