Winnie Chen’s Robin #2 presents a small robin in profile, perched delicately against a largely untouched white background. The bird’s warm orange breast immediately draws the eye, contrasting with the softer brown, grey, and cream tones of its back and wings.

Chen uses loose watercolour washes and restrained brushwork to suggest the bird’s rounded body and fine feathers without overworking the image. Dark linear strokes define the folded wing and slender feet, while the small black eye and pointed beak give the robin an alert, lively expression.

The perch is indicated with only a few pale washes of blue, grey, and ochre, leaving much of the paper exposed. This generous use of negative space gives the work a quiet, airy quality and keeps attention firmly on the bird. Robin #2 is an intimate and understated study that captures the familiar warmth and character of one of Canada’s most recognizable garden birds.
