In Roof with Skylight, Jack Beder captures a striking view across the rooftops of Montreal, transforming an ordinary urban setting into a lively composition of colour, texture and architectural forms. A prominent multi-paned skylight dominates the foreground, its sloping glass panels reflecting pale greens, blues and creams. Beyond it, a series of chimneys, ventilation shafts and flat-roofed buildings rise against a dramatic sky, while a brilliant red metal roof provides a vivid contrast to the surrounding ochres, browns and muted greys.

The expansive sky, painted in sweeping strokes of blue, lavender and soft grey, occupies nearly half the composition, suggesting shifting clouds and atmospheric light. Beder's expressive brushwork and generous application of paint give the rooftops a strong physical presence, while his simplified forms and bold colour relationships create a sense of rhythm and movement. Rather than depicting Montreal's grand landmarks, Beder celebrates the overlooked beauty of its everyday architecture, revealing warmth, character and visual interest in the city's familiar rooftop landscape.
