Erik Gamble’s Abstraction ’81 is a lively, densely constructed work on paper in which geometric and organic forms are layered into a compact, almost architectural arrangement. Curving bands, triangular compartments, circular motifs, and angular outlines overlap and interlock, creating a composition that feels both spontaneous and carefully balanced.

The palette is especially energetic, combining turquoise, violet, yellow, orange, red, blue, green, and muted earth tones. Areas of bright colour are repeatedly interrupted by black accents and outlines, which give the forms definition and create a strong internal rhythm. The visible, textured handling of the medium adds immediacy, while the white paper surrounding the image keeps the dense central structure from becoming visually heavy.

Although fully abstract, the work suggests fragments of figures, masks, mechanical components, or architectural forms without resolving into any single subject. Gamble’s arrangement of repeated curves, wedges, and patterned sections creates a sense of movement through the composition, encouraging the eye to move continuously from one shape to another. Abstraction ’81 is playful, energetic, and highly graphic, with colour and form functioning as the primary subjects of the work.
