Rafał Malczewski’s Laurentians depicts a rocky stream flowing through a densely wooded valley in Quebec’s Laurentian Mountains. A large tree rises prominently along the right side of the composition, its dark trunk framing the view and leading the eye toward the softly layered hills beyond. Rounded masses of blue, green and turquoise suggest the thick forest, while sparse linear marks indicate trunks and branches within the foliage.

In the foreground, angular grey and violet rocks border the fast-moving water. Broad washes of blue, lavender and cream convey the current, while warm ochre and amber tones illuminate the quieter pool near the centre. Dark vertical reflections from the trees deepen the water and create a strong contrast with the brighter foreground.

Malczewski uses fluid washes, softened edges and areas of untouched paper to give the watercolour a spontaneous, luminous quality. The simplified forms and heightened colours transform the Laurentian landscape into an expressive study of light, water and forest. The work is signed “Rafał Malczewski” and inscribed “Laurentians” in the lower left.
