Winnie Chen’s Goldfinch depicts a small yellow bird perched delicately on a slender branch. Its bright lemon-yellow plumage is contrasted by a black forehead, dark wings, and cool violet-blue accents along the feathers and tail. The bird is shown in profile, its compact body and alert posture giving it a gentle sense of animation.
Loose washes of muted green and grey suggest surrounding leaves without defining them precisely. Much of the paper remains untouched, allowing the goldfinch to emerge clearly from the pale background. Chen combines soft, fluid watercolour passages with darker, more controlled marks in the wings and head, creating a balance between delicacy and structure. The restrained composition and generous open space give the work a quiet, airy character while keeping attention firmly on the bird.
