In Sam Paonessa’s North Light, a chain of dark, pine-covered islands stretches across a broad northern lake beneath a luminous, unsettled sky. The tallest evergreens rise near the centre of the composition, their sharply defined silhouettes contrasting with the softer, distant shoreline and hazy bands of atmosphere.
Cool blues and violets dominate the water and clouds, while pale cream and white light break through at the upper left and shimmer across the lake’s textured surface. Paonessa’s loose, energetic brushwork gives the water a restless movement and allows the sky to shift between brightness and approaching storm. The result is a dramatic yet tranquil view of the Canadian wilderness, shaped by changing light, open water and the dark rhythm of the trees.
