In Sam Paonessa’s Here Comes the Sun, tall, windswept pines rise above a brilliant blue lake from a sloping, rocky shoreline. The largest tree forms a strong dark silhouette near the centre of the composition, its irregular branches extending across a softly layered sky of white, lavender, pale pink and blue.

A broad area of luminous white at the upper left suggests sunlight breaking through cloud or mist, while flashes of turquoise and white animate the water below. Paonessa contrasts the open brightness of the lake and sky with the dense greens, deep blues and blackened trunks of the foreground trees. Energetic brushwork and heavily textured passages give the landscape an expressive, almost abstract quality, capturing the moment when sunlight begins to transform a rugged northern shoreline.
