Peter Cheung’s Morning Whispers captures a quiet stable interior, where a groom tends to two horses amid thick golden straw. The scene is intimate and softly lit, with the warm yellow bedding contrasting against the cool blue-grey walls and the shadowed forms of the animals. A bright overhead light glows near the top of the composition, giving the painting the feeling of early morning work before the day has fully begun.

Cheung’s handling is loose and expressive, with quick, visible brushstrokes that suggest rather than define. The horses emerge from the darkness with broad passages of brown, black, cream, and blue, while the figure in blue bends into the scene with a sense of familiarity and care. The painting is less about precise detail than atmosphere: the smell of straw, the muffled quiet of the barn, and the gentle relationship between horse and handler.

The title Morning Whispers suits the work well, as the painting has a hushed, private quality, almost like a moment overheard rather than staged.
