Helen Utsal’s Arbutus and Moon presents a highly stylized woodland scene in which slender arbutus trunks rise through a brilliant field of red, coral and orange foliage. Their cool turquoise-blue bark creates a striking contrast with the warm forest floor and distant vegetation.

A pale full moon hangs near the centre of the composition, surrounded by a soft lavender glow that spreads across the blue-green sky. The trees curve and branch around it, almost framing the moon and giving the painting a strong vertical rhythm. Dark linear marks and loosely indicated trunks in the lower half suggest deeper woodland beyond the brighter foreground.

Utsal uses exaggerated, non-naturalistic colour to create atmosphere rather than literal description. The vivid reds and oranges suggest autumn, while the turquoise trunks and luminous sky give the scene a dreamlike, almost magical quality. The simplified forms, energetic outlines and layered colour make the landscape feel both decorative and expressive.
