Helen Utsal
Helen Utsal’s Blue Morning presents a forest at daybreak, where tall, slender trees rise through a glowing field of pink, coral, violet, and blue. A pale yellow sun hangs near the centre of the composition, partially enclosed by the surrounding branches and giving the scene a quiet focal point.
Utsal simplifies the trees into flowing vertical forms, using turquoise, blue, and violet to distinguish them from the warm background. The upper branches spread outward in irregular silhouettes, while darker undergrowth gathers near the bottom of the painting. Rather than describing the forest naturalistically, she relies on bold colour contrasts and simplified shapes to create atmosphere.
The most striking feature is the contrast between the cool blue trunks and the vivid pink-red sky. The unusual palette gives the landscape an almost dreamlike quality, suggesting the brief moment when early morning light begins to transform the forest. The result is both energetic and serene, with the vertical rhythm of the trees balanced by the soft circular form of the rising sun.
