Joseph Plaskett’s Wharf Posts, Low Tide has a soft, atmospheric quality, with the water and sky treated in broad, powdery strokes on toned paper. In the foreground, a cluster of weathered wharf posts rises from the still water, their vertical forms echoed by pale reflections that shimmer across the surface. At left, the edge of the dock leads the eye into the composition, while the middle distance opens toward a low shoreline with sparse structures and mast-like uprights.

The palette in Wharf Posts, Low Tide is restrained and delicate, built from muted mauves, pale blues, greys, and warm beige. These colours give the scene a hazy, low-tide calm, as though it is being seen in early morning or evening light. The sky is animated by sweeping diagonal marks and soft clouds, while a few white gulls add movement and life.

What stands out most in Joseph Plaskett’s Wharf Posts, Low Tide is the balance between structure and atmosphere. The posts, shoreline, and distant forms anchor the image, but much of the scene dissolves into light, reflection, and suggestion. The result is lyrical and quiet, with an emphasis on mood rather than precise topographical detail.
