Rafał Malczewski’s Winter Meander, c. 1943 is a watercolour on paper depicting a poetic winter scene, measuring 15 x 21 inches.
Rafał Malczewski (1892–1965) was a Polish‑Canadian painter, illustrator, and writer whose work often bridged European artistic traditions and the rugged landscapes he encountered after emigrating to Canada. Born in Zakopane, Poland, he grew up immersed in the artistic and intellectual milieu of his father, the celebrated painter Józef Malczewski, and began his own studies in Kraków before furthering his training in Munich and Paris. Malczewski’s early career in Europe was informed by a strong engagement with landscape and modernist currents, but the outbreak of the Second World War and the political upheaval that followed led him to relocate to Canada in the early 1940s.
In Canada, Malczewski continued to paint and exhibit while also working as an illustrator and contributing to local artistic communities.
