Summer Morning, Harbour Cove, c. 1950 by Guillermo Bestard (1881–1961) depicts a tranquil coastal village, where five small wooden boats rest along the sandy shore and three others float gently in the bay. A small grouping of buildings leads the eye to a wharf extending from the shoreline. In the distance, hills rise in stunning strokes of lavender and pale blue, blending with the sky above and reflected in the water below. The rocks and hills behind the buildings are painted in bold, vibrant greens, refreshing the viewer’s palette, while the multicoloured boats of reds, greens, yellows, purples, blues, and even pinks which animate the scene with energy and charm.
Guillermo Bestard was born in 1881 and developed his artistic career during the first half of the 20th century. His work demonstrates a keen sensitivity to colour, light, and atmosphere, and he frequently depicted landscapes and village scenes with vitality and optimism. Bestard’s approach balanced careful observation with expressive brushwork, creating compositions that convey both place and emotion.
