Randolph Stanley Hewton’s Hauling Logs, Laurentians captures a lively winter logging scene set against the rolling hills of rural Quebec. In the foreground, teams of horses and workers move freshly cut timber across the snow, their activity giving the composition a strong narrative quality. A blue river cuts horizontally through the middle ground, separating the working figures from the distant farmhouses and the sweeping Laurentian hills beyond.
Hewton uses a light, expressive touch, allowing areas of the white ground to remain open and atmospheric. The snow-covered hills are animated by rhythmic bands of ochre, red and gold, while the distant mountain is rendered in deep purples and cool blues. Small accents of evergreen, red brush and pink-roofed buildings add warmth to the winter scene.
The painting combines observation with decorative simplification, giving the landscape both immediacy and design. Rather than presenting winter as still or empty, Hewton shows it as active, colourful and deeply connected to rural Canadian life.
