Frederick Varley, Nude Sketch is a delicate life study rendered with light, searching lines that capture the quiet poise of a standing female figure seen in profile. The model stands with both arms raised above her head, elongating the torso and creating a graceful vertical rhythm from the lifted shoulders down through the hips and legs. Varley uses soft, broken strokes of charcoal to suggest form rather than fully define it, allowing the contours of the body to emerge through subtle tonal accents around the shoulder, waist, and thigh. The figure’s head is slightly inclined, her facial features indicated with only a few economical marks that convey a calm, introspective expression.
Much of the surrounding paper remains untouched, giving the drawing an airy openness that emphasizes the elegance of the pose. The faint inscription “Varley” near the upper right further reinforces the sense that this was a quick observational study, likely produced during a life drawing session in which Varley focused on gesture, balance, and the essential structure of the human figure rather than detailed finish.
