This vibrant landscape painting by Peter Haworth, titled Laurentian Hills, captures the rolling hills and patchwork fields of Quebec’s Laurentian region. Bold, expressive brushstrokes define the sweeping forms of farmland and mountain ranges, while the artist uses rich, contrasting colours to evoke the natural rhythms of the land.

The foreground features rustic barns and cottages scattered across the undulating terrain, with a winding road leading the viewer’s eye deeper into the scene. The middle ground transitions into darker, cooler tones as the hills rise and merge with the majestic, blue-green mountains in the distance. Above, dynamic, cloud-filled skies suggest shifting weather and the ever-changing moods of the Canadian landscape.

Haworth’s modernist style shines through in his use of simplified, geometric shapes and strong colour harmonies, giving the painting both a structural solidity and a lyrical sense of movement. Laurentian Hills reflects his deep appreciation for the rugged beauty of rural Quebec while echoing the broader spirit of Canadian landscape painting in the early-to-mid 20th century.
