Tangled Garden, Madonna Lillies by David Drum is a 15 x 20 in oil and oil pastel painted and signed in ’93. The majestic nature of flowers blooming together is a powerful source of inspiration. Drum utilized a pallet knife and oil pastel shavings for a textured 3D effect for the bright red poppies that cannot be captured to the same extent on camera. Madonna lilies hug the blooms with a grounding force, with Larkspur or lavender in the background. The vibrant use of colours isn’t in primary use for the flowers, with a captivating ultramarine blue background blending into a viridian Green to a dark apple green where the background meets with the blooming foreground. The dark blue background spells a mystique of the unknown, like a dimly lit night in a garden. The subtle pointillism in the bottom half of the piece, used with burnt orange, moving upwards to a light teal, intertwines this piece with life and colour— a piece bound in colourful flowers and lovely texture.
