In Sunny Afternoon, Port Maitland, NS (1985), Franklin Arbuckle captures the beauty of a Nova Scotia fishing village during the summertime. The composition features a small cluster of shoreline buildings, their green gabled roofs catching the light, alongside a moored fishing boat in still water. It features a bright summer sky and vivid reflections in the water.

The palette is composed of soft and bright greens, hints of warm ochres, baby blues, and crisp whites, with touches of yellow and blue that depict the brightness of a sunlit summer day.

This piece was painted en plein air, which was the usual for Arbuckle.

Port Maitland, Nova Scotia is a charming coastal community in Yarmouth County, just a short drive from Yarmouth and Beaver River, spanning 81 km² with around 500 residents. The wharf remains an active fishing hub and a favourite subject for artists and photographers.

This oil on board measures 18 x 16 inches, is signed by the artist on the lower right. It is also additionally signed, titled, and dated "July 1st, 1985" on the back- marking it as a Canada Day work.
