Franklin Arbuckle’s The Filly (c. 1950) is a striking oil on board. The composition centers on a dark filly, its coat catching flecks of light as it lowers its head to the ground. To the right, a farmhand approaches with a bucket in hand. The illuminated barn wall contrasts with the deep shadows inside the barn. This piece is reminiscent of Arbuckle's style, which is grounded in representational realism, marked by careful composition and strong lighting. Arbuckle often depicted rural and working-class life in Canada.
The piece measures 25 x 30 inches, and is signed on the bottom right.
