Frank Hennessey’s Day in Autumn presents a rustic farm scene with a lively, painterly energy. A large golden haystack dominates the centre of the composition, pressed up against dark barn structures whose steep roofs rise sharply into a pale blue sky.
Painted in 1935, Day in Autumn captures the vibrant seasonal beauty and atmospheric sensitivity that define the work of Frank Hennessey, an accomplished artist known for his luminous depictions of the Canadian landscape. Born in Ottawa in 1894, Hennessey demonstrated remarkable artistic ability from an early age, with his nature drawings published when he was just six years old.
A formative experience came at the age of fourteen, when Hennessey joined an Arctic expedition led by Joseph-Elzéar Bernier as an assistant naturalist and artist. This early exposure to Canada’s northern wilderness left a lasting impression, shaping his deep appreciation for landscape and informing the observational strength seen throughout his work. His education included studies at Albion College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, further broadening his intellectual and artistic foundation.
Hennessey’s professional life combined scientific illustration with fine art. Between 1913 and 1915, he worked with the Geological Survey of Canada, producing illustrations for naturalist publications, and later joined the Department of Agriculture’s entomology division.
During his lifetime, Hennessey exhibited widely and gained international recognition. His painting The Loon was shown at the British Empire Exhibition and acquired by the Sheffield Art Gallery, marking an important achievement in his career. Despite his success, his life was cut short in 1941, and a memorial exhibition held in 1943 helped solidify his reputation within Canadian art history.
Today, Frank Hennessey’s work is held in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
