Walter Joseph Phillips’ A Gloucester Village is a finely composed colour woodcut showing a quiet village scene in Cheltenham, dated 1926 in the lower left of the image. The work has the clarity, decorative structure, and carefully controlled colour typical of Phillips’ colour woodcuts.

The composition is arranged low across the sheet, leaving a large expanse of pale sky above the village. At left, leafy green trees frame a whitewashed building with red brick chimneys and blue-green windows. In front of it, a horse-drawn cart loaded with hay passes along the road, accompanied by small figures that add scale and a gentle narrative quality.

The centre and right of the image show cottages with rounded, textured thatched roofs, soft blue walls, and small windows. A stone monument or village cross rises near the centre, giving the scene a sense of local history and permanence. The bright green slope in the foreground contrasts beautifully with the pale buildings and muted grey roofs.

Overall, A Gloucester Village has a calm, pastoral English character. Phillips balances architectural detail, simplified shapes, and soft atmospheric colour to create a scene that feels both observed and idealized. The restrained palette, open sky, and delicate handling make the print feel spacious, quiet, and charming.
