The Falls at Stora, Sweden, 5th State by Caroline Armington is a 9 x 11.5 inch etching on paper that was produced in 1928 and is protected under museum glass. The piece is signed in the bottom right corner as well as titled and numbered 11 in a series of 19 in the bottom left. The monochromatic etching depicts the upper cascade of a fast flowing waterfall. The dark form of a jagged rockface in the foreground of the composition frames the piece as the water plummets over the edge of the chute. Armington’s masterful use of cross-hatching contrasts with the stark white space in the rushing water. The technique adds interest to the piece, creating a sort of chaos where the linework is raining down from the sky, mirroring the rushing water from the falls below.
This piece was on display at the Collector’s Gallery in Calgary before being added to the Rookleys collection.
