The Frozen Silence by Franklin Carmichael is an 8 x 10 inch oil on board that was produced circa 1915. It has an ‘Estate of Franklin Carmichael’ stamp on the reverse and is also inscribed with the inventory number ‘OS-4-S’on the back. The painting depicts a winter landscape on a clear day when the hills are visible far off into the distance. The sky dominates the canvas, creating space within the composition. The snow-covered countryside beneath is spattered with various brush, adding warmth to the otherwise frosty scene. Carmichael uses soft, loose brushstrokes to create an impressionistic atmosphere, conveying the peaceful feeling of this moment in time.
Franklin Carmichael was a founding member of the Group of Seven known for capturing the rugged beauty of the Canadian wilderness. The piece comes to Rookleys from Cowley-Abbott in Toronto.
