Stat Boy, Portrait of Basil Headford, is one of Canadian artist, Alan Collier’s rare portraits, seldom available for purchase and not seen for sale in auction in the last century. This 36 x 48 inch oil on masonite was produced in 1948. Collier went on to produce many landscapes in his lifetime (1911-1990) but his portrait work is less commonly seen, making it quite special.
This large piece, painted from life, depicts a slender man, smirking slightly while gazing at his audience, leaning on a stack of magazines. An old stat machine in the background transports viewers to a past time. The painting combines warm and cool tones and textured brushwork. As such a unique piece in the Collier portfolio, it holds a special place in the Rookleys Canadian Art collection.
