Vieux Montreal by Jewish-Canadian artist, Rose Wiselberg (1908-1992) is an 18 x 23 inch oil on board that is signed in the bottom right and dated on the reverse. This piece, produced in 1942, depicts the famous Old Town of Montreal, known for it's cobblestone streets and traditional architecture. The painting is done in a soft, loose style, with very little detail in the buildings and streets and thin layers of paint that let the canvas show through. The colour palette is quite neutral, using a majority of greys and browns which gives the feeling of an overcast or cloudy day. The silhouette of the famous Mount Royal is visible off into the distance adding depth to this simple piece.

Vieux Montreal
was displayed at the Kastel Gallery as well as in a private collection in Montreal before coming to Rookleys Canadian Art Collection.

Wiselberg lived and died in Montreal and was very fond of capturing the city's harbour and street scenes. She painted exclusively in oil and in addition to urban landscapes, also enjoyed painting the human figure in very intimate, introspective compositions.
