Winter Silence by Nicholas Hornyansky is a 7.5 x 9 inch aquatint on paper that is protected by museum glass and signed on the bottom right corner. The piece depicts a church, obscured by the branches of snow covered trees. A small stream flows through the foreground, its icy waters bordered by deep banks of snow. Hornyansky uses a soft colour palette to bring warmth to the winter scene. A slight glow seeps through the trees, illuminating the church and inviting the viewer into the piece.

Known for capturing an incredible amount of detail in his work, Hornyansky was a master aquatint artist and respected art educator in Canada.
