Old Montreal by Rose Wiselberg (1908-1992) is a 17.5 x 23.625 inch oil on board that was produced in 1951 and is signed and dated in the bottom right corner. This urban landscape painting depicts the streets of the famous 'Vieux' or 'Old-town' of Montreal city. Wiselberg utilizes a colour palette of soft pastels and blue-grey tones to illicit a dream-like atmosphere in this piece, a style she was well-known for. The figures are painted very simply, in just a few brushstrokes, but still manage to have their own personalities. The piece has a lot of depth even without much detail. The tiny rows of fences and window sills lead the eye deeper into this cheerful street scene.

Wiselberg was fascinated with the personality and character of Montreal, where she spent most of her life painting. She loved to capture the various neighborhoods and classical architecture of the city and, in her later years, gave generously to Montreal museums and universities.

This piece was on display at Art Frame L.C. Inc before being acquired by Rookleys Canadian Art and was also previously part of a private collection in Montreal.
