One of Beder’s most celebrated genres is the Montreal street scene, and Spring Along McGregor St., Montreal (1971) is a wonderful example.
The composition centers on a historic building, with a mix of bare and budding trees lining the street, capturing the subtle transition into spring.
Tender greens and soft yellows signal the season’s arrival, while tones of grey, brown and ochre define the architecture.
McGregor Street, now known as Avenue du Docteur-Penfield, is located in Montreal’s Golden Square Mile, near Mount Royal, within the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough. Running east to west along the southern slope of the mountain, it offers scenic views and connects McTavish Street to Côte-des-Neiges Road. The street passes through part of McGill University’s campus and is lined with historic mansions, embassies, and institutional buildings.
