Christmas Card, c. 1975 by York Wilson is a 7.5 x 5.5 in. Christmas card inked on the outside and signed on inside, twice. An abstract portrayal of a village theme, a ceremonial procession with narrative figures, and a donkey leading course, with buildings in the background. The angled slopes resemble a church roof with decorative windows, timelessness. A side fence for a possible entryway is guarded by a figure standing beside it. The angular star motifs above the figures dominate the composition, a reminder of the holidays, and a high resemblance to an ornament or tree topper that’d shine for the family to adore. The overall tonality is restrained and harmonious, serving to both unify the composition and emphasize the angular, cubist-inspired forms. The colours uniformed earth reds and burnt sienna, camel tones, and sage greens complement a subtle nod to the more modern holiday colour scheme. The composition is heavily layered, yet never chaotic; instead, Wilson reflects a rhythmic balance between figure and architecture, colour and shade, abstraction and story.
