Completed in 1986, Yarrow reflects Jack Beder’s late-career focus on floral still lifes. In this pastel, Beder depicts an arrangement of yarrow flowers sitting in a clear glass jar. Rendered in soft but deliberate strokes, the composition demonstrates Beder’s sensitivity to texture and light.
The background is a velvet purple, drawing attention to the yarrows. Pale pink, whites, and greens dominate the palette of the flowers, layered over the purple background to enhance the natural delicacy of the flowers.
This pastel on paper measures 12.5 x 9.5 and is signed by the artist in the lower right. It is catalogued as inventory Pastel #140 from the Beder estate. It appears on page 157 of Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada (2025), published by Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery, and was exhibited in the accompanying retrospective exhibition.
