In Rockwall and River (1969), Jack Beder focuses on the textures and natural forms of a rocky cliff face with a river flowing underneath. Rather than a sweeping view, the composition is intimate, an up-close view of layered rock formations. The rock's vertical striations suggesting time and erosion.

A narrow strip of river runs along the base of the composition, showing a beautiful reflection of the rockwall above. The palette is warm and earthy, dominated by yellows, browns, and olive greens, with subtle hints of teal.

This piece likely depicts a scene from Kootenay, British Columbia, an area known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, mineral-rich rock formations, and winding rivers. Located in southeastern BC, the Kootenays are part of the Columbia Mountains and are home to some of Canada’s most striking geological terrain.

This oil on masonite measures 31.5 x 28.25 inches and is signed by the artist on the lower right. It is featured on page 95 of Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada (2025), a publication by Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery. Acquired directly from the artist’s estate, it is catalogued as inventory #779.

This piece was also included in the Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada exhibition at Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery.
