Painted just a year after the birth of his first child, in 1941, Douglas (My Son) marks a turning point in Beder’s artistic focus. Shifting away from painting Montreal street scenes and sketching in cafes, he began to concentrate on portraits of his loved ones.
This portrait conveys the beauty of early fatherhood, preserving a fleeting moment of infancy through portraiture.

This oil on board measures 10 x 12 inches and is signed at the bottom right.

This painting is on page 54 of Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada (2025), a publication produced by Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery. This piece was featured in the Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada exhibition at Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery.
