This painting captures the rolling hills and orchards of the Okanagan Valley, a region in British Columbia, Canada, celebrated for its fertile soil and ideal climate. By the mid-20th century, the valley had become a thriving center for orchard farming, especially apples, pears, and cherries, thanks in large part to irrigation projects like the Grey Canal, completed in 1914. Orchards dominated the landscape, often run by families or small co-ops.
Beder’s painting not only depicts the natural beauty of the Okanagan Valley, but also serves as a historical snapshot of a time when agriculture was the dominant force in the region's economy.

The bright greens in the foreground stand out beautifully against the varied shades of blue, yellow, and brown that colour the hills in the background.
