Jack Beder’s Man at Table (1940s) is an observational sketch capturing a man seated in a Montreal café.

During this decade, Beder earned a reputation as an “indoor painter,” known for spending countless hours sketching in cafés across Montreal. Over time, these cafes became more than just his subject matter, they were his studio, his social circle, and his a source of inspiration.

With confident strokes, Beder captures a man seated at a table, head up, hand in pocket, elbow resting casually on the tabletop. He’s dressed in a full suit with a vest, formal yet typical of everyday men’s attire in the 1940s, and has a cigarette in his mouth. The loose style brings an immediacy to the drawing, typical of Beder’s on-the-spot café sketches.

This drawing on paper is 8 x 5 inches in size and is signed and dated by the artist in the bottom left. This work is on page 45 of Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada (2025), a publication produced by Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery. This sketch was featured in the Jack Beder: Life and Art in Canada exhibition at Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery.
